Buck Teethed Grey Rabbit

Hare-Um Scare-Um (August 12th, 1939)
Directed by Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton
Animated by Gil Turner

(dates and credits from Dave Mackey's Warner Brothers Filmography Site.)

(This post accompanies John K's When Cartoons Evolved 3 - First Bugs Bunnies post.)

In Hardaway and Dalton's Hare-Um Scare-Um, the white magician rabbit from Prest-O Change-O has become grey, and has developed two giant buck teeth.

This grey rabbit still acts like a 'duck in a rabbit suit' - he is wild, crazy and 'darn fooled!'

Watch him jump, splash and dive into the background - you can almost hear him yell "Woo woo! Woo woo!" can't you?

Here he treats us to a fun song and dance number...

But the singing and dancing can't last that long!

This image of the rabbit showing how thin and unappetizing he is proves to be particularly disturbing...

...and a friendly jolt of a handshake!

Cool, I always loved Hare-Um Scare-Um. As a kid I actually preferred this early version of Bugs, I think it was the laugh. Same one as Woody Woodpecker's first design, which I loved at the time too. Speaking of Prest-O Change-O, I was walking down Broadway yesterday during my lunch break and a street vendor was selling those cheap dollar DVDs, loads of Cartoon Craze DVDs. I found a couple I didn't have and Prest-O Change-O was on one, along with All This And Rabbit Stew. Made my day.

I gotta say I enjoy when you cross-post with John, you provide the all important visuals that go along with his theories. Keep up the great posts.

Hi Klangley - wow, nice find on those cheap dollar DVDs!

You know I prefer that first design of Woody Woodpecker too. He's so ugly - it's great! It's interesting how similar the Hare-Um Scare-Um bunny's laugh is to Woody's.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the cross-posting!

Noticed how John K's topic on Bugs Bunny's evolution has become the most debated blog post ever made? There's about 300 posts in there now! A very interesting read. Personally, I think John is rather un-fair to be comparing classic theatrical animations made with no restrictions to something like South Park, where the animation in thrown together out of templates every week to keep up with the topics of the day. They're a million miles apart in terms of style, technique and conditions. Oh well, I'm going to start doing screen cap post myself of some modern cartoons that have brilliant animation he seems to have not noticed: For starters, Dead Leaves and Triplets of Belleville. =D

(crossposted to the John K blog) from the best of my memory:

"All the world was gay
Swinging all the way
Things were growing brighter day by day
Nothing ever wrong
Life was just a song
Till that Loony Toony came along...OHHHHH...

I'm going cuckoo, woo woo!
Here comes the choo choo, woo woo!
I'm so gooney loony toony nuts in the head,
Please pass the ketchup, I think I'll go to bed! Hoo!

Am I a screwball, woo woo!
Show me the eightball, woo woo!
Once I knew a thing or two
But now I'm a fop-a-roo
Hinky dinky harley, woo woo!"
